The 4-H Honey Bee Challenge introduces youth to the critical role that honey bees play in food production as approximately one in every three bites we eat is the result of these pollinators at work.

  • Working in teams, youth assemble model bees using bristle bot kits and construct foraging routes for their model bees to follow. Teams are evaluated on the efficiency of their materials used in designing foraging routes, the amount of pollen their bees collect, and the time their bees spend foraging.
  • This experience was created for 5 groups of 2-3 youth and is an ideal activity for 3rd - 8th graders led by a teen or adult facilitator.
  • Included in each kit is a facilitation guide (20 pages), 5 challenge mats, parts to assemble 15 “bots” and 15 honey bee stickers.

This kit can be reused to teach multiple groups the lessons about honey bees, but the bristlebots can only be created from scratch once. If you’d like each youth to have the experience to create the bristlebot or are going to let the youth keep their bots, you can purchase additional materials to create 25 additional bots. Great Activity

We are looking forward to using this in our county programming. I think it\'s a great way to use technology to teach about Ag & Natural Resources! Well done!

Worked okay...

The bristle bots didn\'t work super well. We ended up spending over an hour just trying to stabilize the bristle bots so they didn\'t flip over or spin in place. This was a combination of fun and frustrating for the students, especially as some of the batteries would go dead before they could finalize their bots. We started having some success by trimming the bristles on one end of the brush, but this was only figured out 40 minutes in.

Good lesson but the robots don\'t work well

I facilitated the Honey Bee Challenge this past week at our 4H Club Meeting. The booklet provided was very informative and easy to use. The kids enjoyed the lesson and building the foraging routes on the map. When it came time to let the robot bees collect the pollen, we were very disappointed! The bots would not stay upright. They would tip over after a few seconds. We tried everything we could think of: repositioning the motor and battery, trimming the bristles of the toothbrush head to make it less top heavy... they still tipped over. We had a bit of success to try the mat on the carpeted floor (as opposed to the table) where the carpet absorbed some of the vibration. Based on our results, I would not get this kit again.
